Featured Artist for May 2022:
Debby Sundbaum-Sommers "An Artist's Taste of Oregon" Having grown up on the Oregon coast, discovering new places to paint in the rest of this state has been a wonderful adventure. My art trips have taken me to South Eastern Oregon, the Columbia Gorge, North Eastern Oregon, various locations in the Willamette Valley and back to the coast. I’ve had the chance to discover exciting places to paint and wonderful people to paint with. And with every trip, I end up adding to my list of places in Oregon I’d like to visit and paint.
This exhibit is just a taste of some of the places I’ve had the pleasure of trying to capture in watercolor. It’s always a challenge and a joy to be painting on site. The weather, the sounds, the views… all are a part of the experience. By sharing these paintings with you, I invite you to join me in my painting experience! Debby Sundbaum-Sommers, painter, printmaker and arts educator, graduated with a BFA from Oregon State University in 1975. While at OSU she studied with John Rock, Nelson Sandgren, Berk Chappell and Gordon Gilkey. In the following years, she continued to print and paint with Nelson Sandgren. From 2007-2017, Debby studied with Tamarind Master Printmaker Frank Janzen and worked as a press assistant at the Crow’s Shadow Institute for the Arts, a non-profit organization providing opportunities for Native Americans through the arts and fine art printmaking studio. She continues her printmaking in her home studio and her plein air painting in various locations around the Pacific Northwest.
Debby is a demonstrating (printmaking) artist for the University of Oregon’s annual Tools of the Trade Show event. She has also participated in the Philomath Open Studios Tour event for the last 15 years as a studio artist. Both venues allow her to share her knowledge and enthusiasm for printmaking. With education, Debby strives to demonstrate the accessibility afforded by the many types of printmaking options available so that others are encouraged to explore the medium themselves.
In 2004, Debby joined Art in the Valley, a cooperative gallery in Corvallis, Oregon, where she remained a member for 15 years, including serving for two years as co-director. In 2018 she curated a small watercolor exhibit for the Corvallis Arts Center. Debby has also exhibited in numerous juried and invitational shows in Oregon and Washington. She has prints and watercolors in public and private collections in the United States, Ireland, Sweden and Canada. WE ARE OPEN!!
